In our last post we began exploring the acronym IMPROVE. Today we’ll look at Meaning.
“Everything can be taken away from a person but one thing: to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way” -Viktor Frankl, “Man’s Search for Meaning”
MEANING
When navigating difficult situations, we can try to find meaning in them. Most of us during times of hardship will question why we are having such a hard time in the first place. While it is true that awful things happen all the time for no discernible reason, it can be helpful to ask ourselves things like, “what am I learning about myself from this situation?” While we might never get a satisfying answer to the question “why me” or “why did this have to happen,” we can learn from and control our responses to the situation. We can attempt to give them meaning.
