Self Soothing and Senses

May 22, 2020 by Melissa Leave a Comment

Self-Soothing and Sight

Self-soothing is another great skill for stressful times. We can use our senses to reduce the intensity of negative emotions. We’ll start with sight. You can count the number of places you see a certain color in the room. You can look at some of your favorite photos on your phone or in a photo album. You can observe the textures and sizes of different things around you. You can walk in a lovely part of town or out in the country. You can count clouds or try to perceive shapes of familiar objects in them. Using your sense of sight in these ways can help you feel better.

Self-Soothing and Movement

Self-soothing by movement. These are things that make us feel good in our body and can alter our emotional state. Whether we enjoy swimming or dancing, yoga/stretching, or just taking a nice walk, movement can be a way to self-soothe when times are stressful.
